As a board-certified plastic surgeon in Birmingham, I am faced with a number of questions about breast augmentation from my patients. Here are 3 of the most common:

  1. What are the primary differences between silicone and saline breast implants? Choosing between saline and silicone implants is an extremely important aspect of the procedure process, but there are some details all patients should know. The primary difference between the two is that silicone implants are filled with a gel and saline is similar to water.During consultations, I thoroughly explain the properties of each implant, including:
    • Silicone implants feel more natural than the saline devices.
    • The lifespan of silicone implants is 30% longer than saline.

It’s important to remember that both silicone and saline implants are FDA-approved and are considered safe when administered by a real, board certified plastic surgeon. Your choice will ultimately come down to personal preference.

  2. When can I go back to work? Recovery varies with the technique used, a woman’s ability to heal, and the job she performs. Most patients can return to work in 3 to 5 days.
  3. Will I need to have my implants replaced in the future? Contrary to popular belief, breast implants do not need to be “changed out” every 10 years. Saline implants can fail, requiring replacement at a rate of 1% each year where silicone is 0.7% each year. Many women will have their implants for a lifetime, while others may require a second surgery due to personal preferences.
